Tax ExemptionsAn exemption is a release from the obligation of having to pay taxes on all or part of a parcel of real property. Personal exemptions are a reduction in taxes due to a particular personal circumstance according to qualifications set forth in the Massachusetts General Laws. The following persons may qualify for exemption: Elderly - clause 41CBlind - clause 37Veteran - clause 22Surviving spouse - clause 17Tax deferral - clause 41AHardship - clause 18 Applications must be filed on or before December 15 or three months after actual tax bills are mailed for the fiscal year if later. The Fiscal 2008 deadline is February 26, 2008. The qualifying date for exemptions is July 1 of the fiscal year to which the tax applies. Forms are available at the Assessors' office.
